The Outreach Program sometimes referred to as the Vadu Project is in place for over three decades. This instance of public-private partnership in primary health care involves the implementation of all National Health Programs of the Government of India. Eight auxiliary nurse midwives and six male multi-purpose workers based in 8 sub-centers cover the population of 68,000 spread over the 22 villages (6 villages from Haveli Block and 14 from Shirur Block) of the program area. All infrastructure based in the field including health workers belongs to the District Government which also has administrative control. However, the KEM Hospital Vadu Program has technical control and monitors the work performance of the government health workers and in turn reports to the District and State Health Services.This unique arrangement allows the Vadu Program flexibility to innovate delivery of quality primary health care. Objectives: To provide quality primary health care to the population in the 22 villages. To test and evaluate innovations in health care delivery. Routine Activities: The outreach program is mandated to implement on an ongoing basis all relevant National Health Programs in its area and includes: National Reproductive and Child Health Program National AIDS Control Program National Program of Control of Blindness National Anti Malaria Program National Revised Tuberculosis Control Program (http://www.tbcindia.org) National Leprosy Elimination Program Additionally, the Vadu Program also implements other special health programs like Pulse Polio, School Health, Filariasis Control Program, National Epidemic Control Program which includes Surveillance of 7 communicable diseases, etc.
