Study Title:
Documentation of INDEPTH NCD-RF (Non Communicable Diseases Risk Factor) Surveillance data using DDI 3.0
Sponsor:
INDEPTH Network
Purpose:
This concept proposal addresses the need for documentation of INDEPTH NCD study into DDI 3.0 standards. While following DDI 3.0 standard we will be able to preserve complete NCD study life cycle, the full preservation of the life cycle of a study is therefore very interesting for researcher or statistical analyst, which will help them in understanding the study and its concepts.
Summary:
The INDEPTH network (www.indepth-network.org) put its effort in conducting surveillance of non-communicable disease risk factor in the year 2004-05.The multi-site study was designed as a repeated cross-sectional survey. This baseline study was conducted among population aged 25-64 years old in eight Asian HDSS member sites. In each HDSS site, a sample of 2000 individuals was selected using stratified random sampling (in each 10-year interval among men and women) from the HDSS sampling frame. A total of 18,494 people were interviewed in this study. Three sets of data were collected in the survey:
(i) chronic non-communicable diseases risk factors which include self-reported tobacco and alcohol consumption, fruit and vegetable consumption, physical activity pattern, and measured body weight, height, waist, and blood pressure;
(ii) self-reported health status, history of chronic diseases and treatment, and
(iii) Health-care seeking behaviour. Standardized data entry program, created using the EPIDATA software, was used to ensure uniform database structure across sites.
The data merging and analysis were done using STATA Version 8. And a supplementin Global Health Action published all these data as papers (Global Health Action, Supplement 1 2009 DOI: 10 3402/ghav2.0 2085).
Now that the participating INDEPTH sites in Asia have published a total of nine papers out of their NCD work, there is need to fully document the data generated so that it can be used more effectively either by the sites themselves or by any of their collaborators or by the wider scientific community globally.
To be able to do this documentation, we have considered employing a specific tool for this type of activity - the data documentation initiative (DDI) version 3.
